Taking The Mystery Out of Creativity
Early in my career, being creative felt like a magic trick. Behind the curtain, we transformed an idea into something useful or exciting. Then, voila! We’d snatch away the curtain to show the world (or maybe just the client) what we’d made.
If we were lucky, the client was thrilled. They’d wonder how we ever came up with an idea so fantastic and original. Maybe they even give us a standing ovation (yes, I know I’m laying it on thick, but why not). The problem is, not everyone likes surprises. And if the magic fell flat, the stakes were high: we could lose time, momentum, and sometimes even trust.
I rode the highs and lows of this approach before I realized where the real magic was: consistency.
Mastering my craft wasn’t about achieving the highest highs. It was about showing up every day with solid ideas, a commitment to work on them, and – most importantly – open collaboration with clients. All these years later, as the CCO of DCG ONE, that revelation has shaped our entire creative process. So let’s demystify what it means to create magic through consistency.
Getting behind the curtain
So often, agencies assert their expertise by keeping the creative process mysterious. They protect the client from becoming involved in their process until the big reveal. Decades in this industry has taught me that keeping clients at arm’s length leads to disconnects and inconsistencies.
Our competence as creatives shouldn’t be measured by how well we can read minds. We’re marketing experts, but we don’t pretend to know more about our clients’ businesses than they do. That’s why we draw back the curtain and invite them in. Our clients aren’t an audience to our creative process – they’re essential co-creators who make it possible.
Instead of disappearing for weeks, only to return with a grand reveal that may or may not align with business goals, we collaborate with our clients early and often. Digging deep into context. Gut-checking our ideas. At every step, we are looking for alignment.
Usually, this results in something far more valuable than flashy surprises or accolades. Instead, we find resonance. Our clients feel like we understand them, and they can trust us.
The magic is in the process
As you might have gathered at this point, we don’t believe that mystery leads to better creative. Instead, we hold ourselves responsible for bringing our best – and relearning what that is with every project. The real magic is made far from the spotlight. It’s in the daily practice.
For anyone to produce consistently impactful work, they need a deep sense of accountability. They have to be reliable, determined to work hard, and learn from the outcomes, whatever they are. And in the case of marketing, we feel it’s our responsibility to give that accountability to our clients, too.
We aren’t creative for the sake of creativity. We know that the work we do has to win hearts and market share for the clients that rely on us. It’s a data-driven world, and we’re all learning to live in it. That’s part of the reason we created the Customer Experience Portal to give marketing leaders better insight into the performance metrics that matter. We believe that our clients deserve to know what’s working and that it can help us make our work better, too. Plus, getting AI-driven predictive insights helps all of us stay one step ahead.
